A Caring Community Can Foster Mental Health

To be part of a community, each one of us needs a proper place to live, an opportunity for employment, and opportunities to participate in social and recreational activities which give us a feeling of belonging.

People who are recovering or have recovered from mental health problems, have these same needs. However, many are set apart or denied these needs because the community is unaware of its ability to provide care.

Mental illness can affect anyone. One in six Canadians receives professional help for some type of mental health related problem during his or her lifetime. Most problems are temporary: most people recover fully. Experience has proved that a caring community plays an essential role in people returning to a full life.

A community that cares recognizes that mental health problems are part of life: it realizes that removal of a person from friends, activities and familiar surroundings can create new sets of problems. The attitude of the public can make a world of a difference to the recovery of the individual.

Remember, and remind others that people coping with mental illness are first and foremost people; people who need care, people who need you and their community.

It is our hope that this website will provide you with information on our programs and services and educate you to help demystify mental illness to create a fostering community.
