Talking About Mental Illness (T.A.M.I.)
High School Awareness Program

Talking About Mental Illness (T.A.M.I.) is a program that was designed predominantly for Secondary school students in 2001 by the Canadian Mental Health Association & the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The program was developed as “an awareness program” which contains ideas and tools that can help teachers/facilitators increase awareness about mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it.

Communities are proving they can make a difference through education and awareness programs. TAMI helps to increase the understanding of mental health/illness. It is intended to dispel common misconceptions regarding mental disorders and those living with a mental illness. Students are introduced to various mental disorders, causes, treatments and available community resources. The comprehensive 5 session package has been designed to meet the mental health component identified for the Grade 11 Health and Physical Education course.

Day 1 (Mental Health/Illness)

This presentation is an introduction to topics such as: What is mental health? What is mental illness? causes, warning signs, stigma and recovery.

Day 2 (Types of Mental Disorders)

This presentation educates the participants about the common types of mental disorders, where to get help and a personal look into the lives of youth who have experienced a mental illness.

Day 3 (Suicide Awareness)

This educational session is intended to increase participants awareness and general understanding of suicidal behavior. Warning signs, risk factors, tips on developing helping attitudes, and identification of community resources are discussed.

Day 4 (Stress Management)

This presentation offers simple, practical tips on how to reduce, manage or eliminate stress that may negatively impact our lives.

Day 5 (Testimonial)

This presentation allows the participants to hear the story of a person who has experienced a mental illness. The testimonial can be done through video or, whenever possible, through a lecture.

This awareness program is aimed to educate grade 11 students who are enrolled in a health & physical education, sociology, psychology or peer helping class. Teachers can book this 5 day series each semester by contacting a mental health promoter in their area.
