Red Dress Day

Red Dress Day 2024 Image EN

Join CMHA Champlain East as we observe Red Dress Day on May 5th

Content warning: This message refers to colonial and gender-based violence.

CMHA Champlain East recognizes May 5 as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day.

Today is a day to honour and remember the Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have lost their lives to colonial and gender-based violence in Canada, express support for grieving families and communities, and take action to end violence against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.

According to a 2021 RCMP report, 1,017 Indigenous women and girls were murdered between 1980 and 2012, which is a homicide rate approximately 4.5 times higher than that of all other women in Canada.

Red Dress Day began as The REDress Project, the ongoing work of multidisciplinary artist of Anishinaabe and Finnish background Jaime Black, as “an aesthetic response to more than 1,000 missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada.” The project features red dresses which are installed in public spaces to serve as a visual reminder of missing and murdered women, girls and two-spirit people. Introduction

As part of a commitment to placing the needs of our clients first, the CMHA Champlain East Branch aims to engage and empower our clients, families and caregivers in helping to shape the delivery of mental health and addiction services across their local communities.

CMHA Champlain East is currently seeking passionate individuals and community advocates to voluntarily serve as members of its new Client and Family/Caregiver Advisory Committee (CFCAC).

Through the sharing of unique health care stories, opinions, perspectives and lived experiences, the voices of clients, family members and caregivers will actively help to influence and shape the delivery of mental health and addiction services, quality improvement initiatives and in some instances, co-design programs and services within the local communities of CMHA Champlain East.

Clients, family members and/or caregivers who live within Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott or Russell Counties who want to help make a notable difference in shaping the direction of Mental Health for all are encouraged to complete and submit an application for consideration as a member of our Branch’s Client and Family/Caregiver Advisory Council (CFCAC).

Background

The collective experience of clients, family members and caregivers will provide CMHA Champlain East important insights to:

  • Help inform new mental health and addictions support policies, programs and initiatives that influence client care and services in our local communities.
  • Inform the development of quality improvement initiatives that directly impact the client experience.
  • Provide input on and/or co-develop policies and standards guiding collaborative care models.
  • Recommend strategies and practical ideas for improving client care, client/family communication and education.

The CFCAC will include approximately 8-10 client, family and\or caregiver members who ideally represent the CMHA Champlain East branch client’s multicultural and geographic diversity.

The Committee members will be appointed for a two-year term and will attend in-person or virtual  meetings approximately 8-10 times per year, and as needed. Teleconference opportunities will be available, as required. Additional in-person, teleconference and e-mail participation opportunities will occur during the two-year term to contribute to CMHA agency projects, committees, and initiatives.

For numerous years, our dear friend Sylvain Lafleur suffered from generalized anxiety disorder and depression.  On September 22nd 2016, at the age of 29, he succumbed to the disease.  Sylvain was passionate about golf, cars, bikes, fishing and working out.  He had a heart of gold and always lent a helping hand to everyone.  Sylvain left us too early …

In light of the success we had with our first tournament in 2017, the 2nd Annual Sylvain Lafleur Invitational will be held at the Hammond Golf and Country Club on September 29th, 2018.  This tournament will allow us to continue to raise funds and bring awareness to mental health, particularly to suicide prevention. All proceeds raised from this event will be donated to The Canadian Mental Health Association – Champlain East (the “CMHA”), a national organization, with a local branch in Prescott-Russell. The CMHA focuses on promoting mental health to educate our community on issues related to mental health/illness and suicide prevention.

During the 1st Annual Sylvain Lafleur invitational we raised a little over $25,000.00, which funds were submitted to CMHA. With these funds, CMHA was able to continue their work with their Talking About Mental Illness program, which is targeted to high school students. They conducted a total of 68 presentations in Prescott-Russell in 2017-2018, reaching a total of 1,689 students. Following these presentations, 18 student interventions were conducted as a result of self-identifications with mental health issues or that of a friend or a family member. Education and awareness is key to preventing and reducing mental health concerns from being undiagnosed. Prevention is early intervention.
